Bak Kwa is an indulgent Singaporean delicacy, steeped in culture, heritage, and artisanal craft. It’s a treat that transcends cultures and is loved by people around the world, both young and old, much like France’s macarons, Italy’s cannoli or Japan’s mochi.
Product Description:
Singapore-style fire-grilled jerky, also known as Bak Kwa, is a beloved delicacy and the most popular jerky in the Asia-Pacific region. It is the world’s best-selling pork jerky by volume, enjoyed and shared across generations. More than a festive favorite, Bak Kwa is a cherished gift that conveys warmth, prosperity, the spirit of togetherness and sharing.
Originating in Singapore, it started being sold by Singapore hawkers 120 years ago, in 1905. Today, there are more than 1,000 specialty shops selling freshly grilled Bak Kwa in upscale shopping malls and popular tourist districts across cities in the Asia-Pacific region, including Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Japan. In recent years, it has also gained popularity in the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
According to U.S. Customs, Bak Kwa is among the most smuggled and confiscated meat product brought into the United States by returning travelers from the Asia-Pacific region, as meat imports are prohibited under U.S. customs regulations.
In 2012, Fragrant Jerky introduced this gourmet delicacy to the American market with the opening of its first U.S. branch in Los Angeles.
Fragrant Jerky’s Bak Kwa has been voted “Handmade Gift” and other Food Category winner three times since 2013 by the Los Angeles Times. It offers a unique and authentic Asian-style jerky, deep in umami flavor, handcrafted and rooted in a 120-year heritage.
Production: Since 2012, Fragrant Jerky products have been made in our California-licensed and regularly inspected facility in Los Angeles, using high-grade, UDA-certified meat and approved natural ingredients with minimal processing. Daily production is led by a third-generation Singapore Bak Kwa master, with California State-Certified Food Protection Managers (CFPM) overseeing food safety.
